What Actually Changes in Odoo 20
These are the items in the official Odoo 20 release notes that hit an Odoo 20 migration hardest. If you run custom modules, every one of them is real work, and together they are why a version bump is not the same thing as an upgrade.
Icons in Every Custom View
Font Awesome has been replaced by Material Symbols. Every custom module, report and view that references an fa icon needs to be moved across to the new set.
Record Rules Are Gone
Access rights have been simplified. Record rules are removed and the domain now sits directly on the access right, so every custom rule has to be rewritten.
Chatter Tracking Values Removed
Tracking messages are generated on the fly instead of stored. Burndown charts and stage duration were reworked to match. A dedicated module exists if you still need stored values.
Chart of Accounts Restructured
Account groups are replaced by parent accounts and account codes become optional. Asset models are replaced by depreciation models.
Accounting Workflows Tightened
Entries touching bank accounts must now originate from bank transactions, payment statuses have been renamed, and the standalone Employee Expenses menu is gone.
Notifications and AI Credits
Push notifications move off Firebase to Odoo’s own service, and every AI feature now consumes IAP credits that need to be budgeted for.
